What Is Low Testosterone?

Low testosterone is a condition where the testicles don’t produce enough of the male sex hormone testosterone. It’s also called hypogonadism or “Low T”.

Testosterone is vital in male growth and development. It plays an important part in developing male reproductive tissues. It contributes to male characteristics like a deep voice, body hair, and increased bone and muscle strength. It also helps regulate functions like sperm production, bone density, and red blood cells.

Testosterone levels begin to decrease gradually after age 30. For some, symptoms may not even be noticeable. Others might experience several unwanted symptoms if their levels drop too low.

Age isn’t the only cause of low testosterone. There are several causes that can strike at any age, including:

  • Obesity
  • Trauma
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Tumors
  • Inflammatory conditions
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Diabetes

8 Signs You May Have Low Testosterone

Symptoms of low testosterone vary from person to person and depend on age and the cause. They can range from the barely noticeable to those severe enough to be disruptive to your daily life and relationships.

Here are 8 common signs of low testosterone:

1. Decreased sex drive

Testosterone is important for arousing both the brain and body. Sex drive often decreases along with the decrease in testosterone as men age. Low testosterone which is a result of other conditions may cause a more noticeable drop in desire.

2. Erectile dysfunction

Testosterone plays a role in both getting and maintaining erections by helping to trigger a specific chain of reactions. Low testosterone can disrupt that process, making it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection.

3. Reduced sperm count and semen production

Testosterone also helps produce semen. Many men with low testosterone notice they are producing less. They may also suffer fertility problems if they’re not making enough sperm to father a child.

4. Hair Loss

Testosterone contributes to hair production. Hair loss is often a result of aging or genetics, but hair loss that includes facial and body hair may be due to low testosterone.

5. Unexplained fatigue

Being tired all the time is not a natural sign of aging, but it can be a symptom of low testosterone. Low testosterone can cause fatigue and low energy, even in men who are getting enough sleep.

6. Decrease in muscle mass and bone density

Testosterone helps increase muscle and bone mass. Men with low testosterone may notice they’re losing muscle mass but won’t notice the decrease in bone density unless they suffer a fracture. Decreasing bone density puts them at risk of developing osteoporosis.

7. Increased body fat

Along with the decrease in muscle mass, many men with low testosterone experience increased body fat. They may also notice enlarged breast tissue, called gynecomastia.

8. Mood changes

Testosterone can affect mood, concentration, and energy levels. Men with low testosterone may notice increased irritability, depression, decreased energy, and difficulty maintaining focus. It may also affect memory.

If you are experiencing these symptoms, it’s time to talk to your doctor. Testosterone levels can be checked with a simple blood test.
